I've been very bored lately. My plan for the uni break was to learn loads of new skills, maybe get into some new hobbies, and to visit loads of new places. I've actually managed to achieve lots of that, you'll soon get to read about some places I visited for the blog.
However, if there's one thing I hate about holidays, it's how distant I am from all my friends. They've all got their own lives, most of them are abroad now, so all I can do is at most message them. Occasionally this leads to us talking, sometimes nothing comes from it, which is fine. I'm not the best when I'm constantly alone, though, because then I inevitably end up scrolling more on my phone than I should. Three weeks in, all that time adds up, and suddenly I'm slightly worried I'm not maximising my break to the fullest.
I do think I've been doing some cool things, though:
- I'm still writing loads. The blog has slowed down a bit, but my fiction output is as strong as ever. I've also managed to get loads of feedback from random people, which has helped a lot.
- I've managed to work on my music. I've even been working on an album, which is mostly rough electronic music. It's been enjoyable working on it, though most of the work was spent before the holidays, when I was bored around exam season.
- I've been gaming a bit; I managed to complete Portal 2 last week. It's a fantastic game, and I'm really sad we won't get a third, because the Portal series as a whole is the most fun series I've ever played. Terrific plot, tremendous voice acting and music, and loads of humour to boot, making what would otherwise be a normal puzzle game one of the greatest of all time.
- I'm also trying to get into films. So far, I've enjoyed the sensual, erotic Blue Velvet, directed by film-making legend David Lynch, and the more suspenseful Whiplash. Otherwise, I'm not sure where to go from here, but I'm enjoying them a lot.
- I've also got back into chess. I'm not much better than I was before, in fact my Elo rating's abysmal, but it's so satisfying when everything clicks into place and I manage to snatch an unlikely win.
Okay, having written all that down, it seems like my break's actually going really well. I guess it's my anxiety acting against me, after all. What a relief. I still think it could be more fleshed out, but that will come with time.
There is one other thing I'll get to do...go on holiday! I won't say where I'm heading off, at least not yet, but safe to say I'm looking forward to it. This time round, I'm planning to blog about it, maybe not necessarily lengthy posts filled with history and scenic photos, more just me fooling around.
You may have realised I don't tend to blog about trips abroad. The last time I did was almost two years ago, and ever since, I've preferred making holidays strictly something for me to enjoy in the moment. Having since gotten onto Instagram, I've realised I'm surprisingly alone on this; everyone's constantly mentioning what they're getting up to, no matter how mundane. With that, I've changed tack, and decided that you would much rather read about sunny beaches than foggy suburbs.
With that said, I hope you enjoy the holiblogs. I'm not sure how many I'll end up writing, there won't be one every day. They might not even be long. But if this is going to be a break I'll look back on thinking "I achieved a lot, I didn't rot in my room all day", then I think it's worth a try.
